Mathematical model and simulation of retina and tectum opticum of lower vertebrates.U. an der Heiden & G. Roth - 1987 - Acta Biotheoretica 36 (3):179-212.
The processing of information within the retino-tectal visual system of amphibians is decomposed into five major operational stages, three of them taking place in the retina and two in the optic tectum. The stages in the retina involve a spatially local high-pass filtering in connection to the perception of moving objects, separation of the receptor activity into ON- and OFF-channels regarding the distinction of objects on both light and dark backgrounds, spatial integration via near excitation and far-reaching inhibition. Variation of (...)

  4. Principles of self-generation and self-maintenance.U. An Heiden, G. Roth & H. Schwegler - 1985 - Acta Biotheoretica 34 (2-4).
Living systems are characterized as self-generating and self-maintaining systems. This type of characterization allows integration of a wide variety of detailed knowledge in biology. The paper clarifies general notions such as processes, systems, and interactions. Basic properties of self-generating systems, i.e. systems which produce their own parts and hence themselves, are discussed and exemplified. This makes possible a clear distinction between living beings and ordinary machines. Stronger conditions are summarized under the concept of self-maintenance as an almost unique character of living (...)

Distantiatie in de hermeneutiek Van Paul Ricoeur.Gert-jan van der Heiden - 2007 - Bijdragen 68 (3):277-297.
One of the key concepts of Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics is the notion of distanciation. In this article we show that Ricoeur introduces this notion as a correction of Heidegger’s focus on being-in and Gadamer’s emphasis on belonging . Ricoeur argues that distanciation does not lead to the uprooting of our belonging to a tradition. Rather, distanciation is an integral part of the dynamics that constitutes tradition. We discuss the different senses in which Ricoeur understands distanciation as a positive and productive (...)

Interpreters of the Divine: nancy’s poet, jeremiah the prophet, and saint paul’s glossolalist.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2021 - Angelaki 26 (3-4):90-100.
In both “Answering for Sense” and “Sharing Voices,” Jean-Luc Nancy offers an account of the poet as an interpreter of the gods. The voice of the poet in both Homer’s Iliad and Plato’s Ion is intrinsically and originally doubled. Although there is no divine voice outside of the poet’s voice, the divine voice speaks in the poet’s voice and the poetic voice gives a voice to that of the goddess or the muse. What exactly is at stake in this phenomenon (...)

The voice of misery: a continental philosophy of testimony.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2019 - Albany: SUNY Press, State University of New York.
A systematic study of testimony rooted in contemporary continental philosophy and drawing on literary case studies. From analytic epistemology to gender theory, testimony is a major topic in philosophy today. Yet, one distinctive approach to testimony has not been fully appreciated: the recent history of contemporary continental philosophy offers a rich source for another approach to testimony. In this book, Gert-Jan van der Heiden argues that a continental philosophy of testimony can be developed that is guided by those forms (...)

The Gadamerian Mind.Theodore D. George & Gert-Jan van der Heiden (eds.) - 2021 - New York, NY: Routledge.
"Hans-Georg Gadamer is one of the most important philosophers of the post-1945 era. His name has become all but synonymous with the philosophical study of hermeneutics, the field concerned with theories of understanding and interpretation and laid out in his landmark book, Truth and Method. Influential not only within continental philosophy, Gadamer's thought has also made significant contributors to related fields such as religion, literary theory and education. The Gadamerian Mind is a major survey of the fundamental aspects of Gadamer's (...)

Exile, Use, and Form-of-Life: On the Conclusion of Agamben’s Homo Sacer series.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2020 - Theory, Culture and Society 37 (2):61-78.
The last two volumes of Giorgio Agamben’s Homo Sacer series are concerned with developing a theory of use. This article offers a critical assessment of the two concepts, use and form-of-life, that form the heart of this theory: how do these two notions offer a solution to the problem of bare life that forms the core of the Homo Sacer series? First, the author describes how the original problem of bare life is taken up in The Use of Bodies and (...)

Continental Perspectives on Community: Human Coexistence From Unity to Plurality.Chantal Bax & Gert-Jan Van Der Heiden (eds.) - 2019 - New York: Routledge.
This volume explores the issues at the center of many historical and contemporary reflections on community and sociality in Continental philosophy. The essays reflect on the thought of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Levinas, Arendt, Derrida, Badiou, Fanon, Baldwin, Nancy, Agamben and Laruelle. Continental Perspectives on Community brings the different approaches of these thinkers into conversation with each other. It discusses the possibility of how the concept of community can extend beyond the one and beyond any sense of unity and totality. Additionally, the (...)

Announcement, Attestation, and Equivocity.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2011 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 85 (3):415-432.
Ricoeur’s hermeneutics provides us with an important and original account of the meaning and the implications of the “ontological turn” that has taken place in hermeneutics since Heidegger’s work. By means of the pair ontologisation and hermeneutisation, which is borrowed from Jean Grondin, this paper examineshow Ricoeur rethinks the relation between being and language. Distancing itself from Nancy’s critique of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics, this paper first shows thatRicoeur’s hermeneutic ontology should not be understood as a “secondary” form of hermeneutics. Rather, it (...)

On the way to attestation: trust and suspicion in Ricoeur’s hermeneutics.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2014 - International Journal of Philosophy and Theology 75 (2):129-141.
In this article, I will explore the archeology of the concept of attestation in Ricoeur’s work. In a brief discussion of his early reflections on Husserl’s concept of the ego (as an example of reflexive philosophy), I show how the dialectic of trust and suspicion enters Ricoeur’s hermeneutic concerns. I argue that this dialectics remains present in his account of attestation. By a brief confrontation with Heidegger’s notion of attestation as developed in Being and Time, I show that the uniqueness (...)

The abandonment of hermeneutics and the potentialization of the past: Nancy and Agamben on the loss of tradition.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2015 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 41 (9):929-944.
Both Agamben and Nancy introduce the notions of ban and abandonment to understand the contemporary experience of the loss of tradition. Whereas Nancy reinterprets hermeneutics in light of this abandonment, Agamben tries to move beyond this account of abandonment. In this article, I examine how these two positions are related and to which conceptions of hermeneutics and tradition they give rise. First, I explore how the notion of abandonment provides an alternative to Gadamer’s account of hermeneutics, which focuses on the (...)

The Letter and the Witness: Agamben, Heidegger, and Derrida.Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2015 - Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology 46 (4):292-306.
In Remnants of Auschwitz, Agamben introduces a particular conception of bearing witness to overcome the problems contained in an account of language that depends on the voice or the letter. From his earlier work, it is clear that his critique of the voice and the letter is not only directed to ancient and medieval metaphysics, but also concerns Heidegger's account of the voice and Derrida's account of the letter and writing. Yet, if Agamben is correct in claiming that bearing witness (...)

In Le Sens du monde, Nancy argues that “some value of scintillating phenomenality remains invincibly attached” to Badiou’s notion of the event. This paper examines to what extent Nancy’s comments still apply to Badiou’s phenomenology of the event developed in Logiques des mondes. In particular, although Badiou provides a thorough account of the event from the perspective of the consequences it enables, I show on the basis of Nancy’s suggestion that he tends to neglect an account of the event from (...)

On Faith and the Holy in Heidegger and Derrida.Ben Vedder & Gert-Jan van der Heiden - 2014 - In Zeynep Direk & Leonard Lawlor (eds.), A Companion to Derrida. Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 430–446.
In his essay “Faith and Knowledge,” Derrida provides us with his most direct and explicit discussion of the phenomenon of religion. One of the important ideas of “Faith and Knowledge” is that faith and knowledge cannot be understood in a simple opposition to each other as if knowledge would not require forms of faith and as if faith would be completely purified of knowledge. In order to get a precise impression of Derrida's interpretation of faith and the holy, this chapter (...)

Saint Paul and Philosophy: The Consonance of Ancient and Modern Thought.Antonio Cimino, George Henry van Kooten & Gert Jan van der Heiden (eds.) - 2017 - De Gruyter.
The much-acclaimed present-day philosophical turn to the letters of Saint Paul points to a profound consonance between ancient and modern thought. Such is the bold claim of this study in which scholars from contemporary continental philosophy, new testamentary studies and ancient philosophy discuss with each other the meaning Paul's terms pistis, faith. In this volume, this theme discusses in detail the threefold relation between Paul and continental thought, the Graeco-Roman world, and political theology. It is shown that pistis does not (...)

The U.S. imperial project, pursued by both Republican and Democratic administrations, has many dimensions, including military force and the mechanisms for its legitimation; the global economy and flows of money and people across borders; and biopolitics, or the disciplining of bodies through the micro-mechanisms of power apart from traditional forms of sovereignty.

Aestheticised violence in the fine arts, on the stage or in literature has often been discredited, but at the same time - not least because of the contiguity of violence and sexuality - it is received with pleasure. In a survey of literary examples from antiquity, the Renaissance and modernity, the author begins by elucidating the development in Europe of the troubled relationship between (...)

Flow is a state of full task engagement that is accompanied with low-levels of self-referential thinking. Flow is considered highly relevant for human performance and well-being and has, therefore, been studied extensively. Yet, the neurocognitive processes of flow remain largely unclear. In the present mini-review we focus on how the brain's locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system may be involved in a range of behavioral and subjective manifestations of flow. The LC-NE system regulates decisions regarding task engagement vs. disengagement. This is doneviadifferent (...)

Überschüsse der Erfahrung: Grenzdimensionen des Ich nach Husserl.Stefano Micali - 2008 - Dordrecht: Springer.
